Meet our latest Mighty Bee, Sofia. Learn about her story from her mother, Dawny.
How did you learn about your pregnancy and what was your initial reaction?
Sofia was our first baby. We were so excited to hear about our pregnancy and the journey of preparing for Sofia’s arrival.
For those reading that may have never had an experience with the NICU, can you explain what it was like learning your child would be the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit? When did you first learn you would be spending (a lot of) time there?
We found out within the first 24 hours of Sofia’s birth that she would have to spend “some time” in the NICU. Learning that Sofia would have to go to the NICU right after her birth was very frightening. Looking back, we had no clue what to expect regarding the journey ahead.
Tell us about the birth of Sofia and meeting her for the first time.
It was our 37-week appt with our OBGYN and the doctor noticed that I looked smaller than our appointment the week before. She encouraged us to have an ultrasound that day and we were immediately informed that Sofia was under 3 pounds and needed to arrive that day. Sofia arrived via emergency c-section that same day weighing 2 lbs., 14 ounces.
Did you have any (likely many) but one that stands out really scary time in the NICU?
One of many standout memories, was when we were visiting Sofia in the NICU and she stopped breathing. Before we could leave the room for the emergency team to assist her, we found ourselves in the room watching while the team worked tirelessly to revive her.
When did you know that Sofia would need extra therapies and which ones have been the most beneficial?
We knew within the first few weeks after her birth that Sofia would not only need extensive therapy services, but also additional respiratory support and numerous surgeries.
How did you maintain during the rollercoaster of emotions that the NICU causes?
Prayer and support from family was very impactful! As a couple, we were determined to not shut either other out and to work as a team, even though we both were experiencing our own grief.
Do you have any suggestions or coping suggestions for other Moms in your position?
Although it is difficult, you have to continue to take care of yourself – “put your own mask on first!”
How did you hear about Bee Mighty and what made you apply?
Our previous physical therapy company told us about Bee Might and we were so grateful to find an organization that provided such needed financial support to cover the additional costs of therapies.
What does a typical day with look like now?
Sofia has made tremendous progress. Although she continues to need therapies and support from various doctors, she loves school, reading, and being an encourager to her friends and family! Sofia takes swimming and piano lessons.
Any advice you would give another family going through the process? Anything that really helped you get through the experience?
Take it one day at a time. The journey is not easy, fair, nor without difficult days. However, there are good days, notable progress, and amazing people that are there to support you along this journey! And, those are things to be grateful for!
